Transmitter location matter DP Level Measurement - Style #4: Unbalanced or Unequal System.

Diaphragm seal systems are widely used in all sorts of industries. They can be used to measure and monitor level, pressure and flow. Each of these measurement types have different ways of mounting hook-up, what we call a mounting style.

In this series, we explain and introduce the several mounting styles of each situation. Today we will focus on Style #4: Unbalanced or Unequal System.

Unbalanced systems are from a performance perspective less recommended due to the extra inaccuracies that can occur due to the different capillary lengths. However, with stable process conditions it can work fine. In changing process conditions, the different seal sides are exposed to different conditions, increasing the TPE and the uncertainty. However in some (stable) situations and under certain conditions it could be a acceptable solution.

Pro:
* Easier mounting of one side of the system.
* No loose capillary line that is bundled together.
* No separate fixture needed for the transmitter (mounting bracket) as directly mounted on the seal.
* Possible slightly more economical

Con:
* Unequal ambient temperature effects on both sides, may create more unstable measurement. The less stable and varying process and ambient temperature conditions, the higher the effect
* Higher TPE and inaccuracy than with balanced system
* Higher Static Pressure effect due to the unequal volume on H and L side
* In case of higher process temperature (>200°C), a direct mount construction might require a cooling element.

If this is the ideal mounting style for your situation, depends on several factors such as requirement for ease of installation, accessibility of the instrument: reading of local display and maintenance or obstacles that do not allow to place the instrument elsewhere.

Not taken all the diaphragm seal systems into account correctly, may result in this case that the measurement could fail. Hence proper engineering and checking of this situation is ideal for your situation is essential. With the use of our BaseCal tool, we can easily check this for you.
